So, a little note about how Joe feels about competitions…
Overall, I don’t like them. Now, that being said, I realize there are benefits to them. I have seen more PRs on an individual basis in competitions more than anywhere. The crowds, the adrenaline, the person next to you, and let’s not forget the person right behind you and the one right in front of you that you are only 1 rep away from….the push, the drive, the achievement. AMAZING. I have been to the last four CF Games, and each one was epic, seeing things done that we never thought mere human mortals would do.
These amazing youtube videos we watch and stories we hear and tell are great, and we are immortalizing the top 2%. And those 2% should rightly be talked about and idolized; they put in the work, they ARE mere mortals, and therefore they show us what IS actually attainable.
However, the other 98% are not that. Most people (and I go mainly off of Coach Glassman’s idea that 60% of CF gyms are soccer moms and the like) are still trying to string together that second double under, still adjusting the way our body feels trying to figure out how to jump that power clean up, still figuring out how to scale every day’s WoD.
These people, the 98% (of which I am easily included) are my people. These are the people that are still finding their way through the dark struggle of the WoD, and are the determined group that despite not even knowing what the movement written on the board may be, still lace up their shoes and show up. These people….or should I say…US…WE…are the people I want to surround myself with. We have figured out that the demolishing WoD isn’t about the weight, it’s about the drive, the mental toughness, the accomplishment. We long ago stopped thinking about the things we can’t do, and now focus on the accomplishments that we HAVE done, and WILL do tomorrow.
So yes, competitions have their place, but I could go on about how there are too many, how CrossFitters tend to forget the basics and just because a handstand strict foot press hasn’t been done before doesn’t mean it’s a good idea, or how demolishing the athletes until the last one is standing isn’t a test of fitness. Too most, the competition is ourselves, and the fact that we even show up puts us on the podium. If you have a barbell in your hands next to me, then YOU are among the best. You ARE the best.
So yes, I open our Face Off Friday with CF Camarillo with open arms, and I even asked to be a part of it. It’s friendly, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to meet like minded people. CF Camarillo has been around for a while and puts together an amazing community in their own right. What I really mean to relay unto you is the mindset. Don’t be too scared or too shy to participate. You are one of us. We want you there. I…WE…are proud as hell to have you next to us.
Welcome to the community of people that have decided that easy will no longer suffice.
