I’ve been working with the New You crew for two weeks now, going into our third week this week. I’ve been having my guys focus a lot on understanding how to control their body and intentionally move their body or barbell, not let the movement or barbell move them. Does that make sense? When we do anything, air squat, back squat, deadlift, clean, snatch, even abmat sit ups, you need to use your muscles and learn how to put yourself in position and execute the lift or movement using your body correctly. Lets use the air squat for example. I see a lot of members simply plop into the bottom of the squat, bottoming out and butt winking, and then using their butt to lead their way out of the bottom of the squat. I’m teaching NY to understand and learn how to tighten up their core and body during every movement. In the AS I have them tighten their core and keep their body tight and braced. From this position they are learning to lower themselves into the bottom of the squat and use their leg strength to stop themselves just under parallel. They aren’t letting gravity take them down. From the bottom of the squat they know to squeeze their glutes drive out the knees, push the floor down with their feet, and raise aggressively and intentionally raise themselves out from the bottom of the squat. There is a noticeable difference when doing movements properly.
