Brains AND Brawn…Gabe Valdez!
I’m a lover, not a fighter, unless it’s fighting for what I love.
Reading, backpacking, technology tinkering.
How You Found CrossFit and/or Why You CrossFit:
I saw the CF Games on ESPN and didn’t think it looked too difficult. I went to my gym and did Fran. I don’t think I even finished. A few months later I saw a banner on Facebook for free intro classes at CFOx. I came only to the free classes on weekends for a month because I was/am frugal. Eventually I joined on-ramp.
I Crossfit because it’s dynamic and endlessly entertaining. I also enjoy the social aspect.
Favorite Workout(s) and Why:
Anything involving OHS or HSPU. Shoulders and core stability are my strengths.
Least Favorite Workout(s) and Why:
Only ones that I haven’t properly warmed up for. For example, I usually have tight hips, so if I don’t open them up for workouts heavily involving the hips, I don’t like the workout. Chippers aren’t my favorite.
Words of Advice For New CrossFitters:
Don’t let the WOD determine if you will come in or not. Mobilize mindfully. Don’t just space out. Feel a mind-body-spirit (brain-body-breath) connection when you foam roll or do longer static stretches. Opening your mind will better open your body. Better mobility leads to better movement patterns and that will lead to more opportunities to increase strength, power, and quickness.
Any last comments:
I appreciate all the coaches. Because education is my profession, going to the box requires a paradigm shift in my mind. I go from teacher to learner and my stubbornness lingers. I’m humbled by their patience. They help make me a better teacher because I sympathize with how difficult learning can be.
