Marita Bonita…she’s a sassy pistola!
Name: Marita Martin
Quick Bio: I’m originally from Ecuador and I moved to this wonderful country at the age of twenty (I guess I’m more American than Ecuadorian now) to marry my best friend. My husband and I met when he was living in Ecuador as a missionary from our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After he finished his mission, he went back to Ecuador three times and brought me back with him the third time with a fiance visa, and a little bit over two months later we got married! I’ve been married for almost twenty-one years and have three amazing kids ages 18, 15, and 12.
Occupation: Full time mom, wife, and student. And I’m loving every minute of it!
Non-CrossFit Hobbies: I love hikes, to travel and do crazy things like skydiving.
How You Found CrossFit and/or Why You CrossFit: I was introduced to CrossFit by a very good friend of mine. For months he kept telling me about these great workouts called WODs and how challenging they were. At the time I used to run between twelve and fifteen miles a week and I thought to myself “how hard can this CrossFit thing be? I run, therefore, I’m in great shape!” My first WOD was very simple. It consisted of three movements: Air squats, push-ups and 200 m run. This WOD didn’t take long to do, but let’s just say that I was reminded for the next week every time I sat down on the toilet or I went up and down the stairs about how weak I really was. I was sore everywhere and I felt some muscles that I didn’t even know I had. I was hooked and I wanted more!
I keep doing CrossFit because it challenges me. CrossFit has made me stronger mentally and physically.
Favorite Workout(s) and Why: I love team workouts because it pushes me to work harder when I know someone is depending on me, and I get to rest for a little bit. I also like WODs with a time cap because I know I don’t have time to waste and I have to move faster if I want a good score on the board.
Favorite Movement(s) and Why: Deadlift, Power Clean, Power Snatch and Kettlebell Swings. I’m good at them and they make me feel strong!
Least Favorite Workout(s) and Why: Fran. She is short and evil!
Least Favorite Movement(s) and Why: Thrusters, Rowing and the Bike. Because of my short-chicken legs.
Your Superpower: Happiness. I am empowered with the choice of being happy and I try to use that power every single day.
Words of Advice For New CrossFitters: Don’t be afraid to try it out. Yes, it will be hard at the beginning, but I promise you that you will get better and it will be one of the best decisions you will make in your life for your life.
Any last comments: I feel so honored and humbled at the same time for having this great opportunity of being CFOx “Star of the Month.” Thank you to all the coaches for putting up with me and my sassy attitude, for believing in me and seeing my potential, and for teaching me the skills to be able to succeed in this great sport that I love so much.
