The 40% Rule
I have run THREE full marathons in my life. Every single one, I hit the wall or ‘bonked out’ right around mile 18, a very common occurrence. Yet I still finished every single one. How did I -or anyone for that matter- do it?
The 40% rule. Although I didnt find out about this until much later, it comes from the epitome of mental toughness, the Navy SEALs. When your mind is telling you that you are done, you’re really only 40% done.
My first week of CrossFit, there was a WoD that had 100 pullups in it. I got up there, and did 8. My coach said ‘No problem, take 30 seconds, go again‘. Then I did 6. ‘One more time‘…I did 2. I was DONE. ‘We’re not leaving here until you get to 100.”
And I got there. One at a time, I finished. He taught me that there is always something more in the tank. You’re mind will quit way before your body does. The next time you think you are just absolutely DONE in a WoD, take a breath through your nose, and know that you can do one more.
